CONCUSSION

Plot:

Well educated and accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu (Smith) while doing an autopsy on a once famous football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, discovers an abnormality with his brain. While seeking to to discover the reason for the brain damage there are other former players that begin to die with the same brain disorder and he soon realizes that it is from their days on the gridiron and the hard, punishing blows they sustain to the head while on the field. Dr. Omalu upon the certainty of his finds teams with former Pittsburgh Steeler's physician Dr. Julian Bailes (Baldwin) to expose the chronic brain damage that is taking a toll on football players within the NFL but is met with great resistance from league officials. But despite the threats on his life and his job he is persistent to make the NFL become accountable for the continuous brain disorder being inflicted to the players.

Reel Talk:

I love a good game of football and have even been amazed at some of the blows that have been distributed by some of my favorite players, but after seeing this movie it has changed the way I look at the game of football. There has even been rumors that the NFL has resentment toward this film (again allegedly) but if anything they should appreciate that now people can see how players' brains are being scrambled like eggs while we are entertained at their expense. Based on true actual events, Will Smith did an excellent performance as the Nigerian doctor that took on the NFL head on knowing the personal consequences to him. This is an awesome movie but a sad eye opener that will keep your attention regarding brain damage while watching our favorite sport. Worth cashing out to check it out!

Starring: Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Hill Harper
Directed by: Peter Landesman
Rated: PG-13

I give it 5 corn dogs.

DADDY'S HOME

Plot:

Brad Whitaker (Ferrell) is married to Sarah (Cardellini) who has two children from a previous relationship. All Whitaker wants is to be accepted as a father figure by the children who have not quite respected him as the man of the house. But after some time it appeared that he had made a breakthrough and they started acknowledging him as their step dad until there is an unexpected visit from the kids real dad Dusty Mayron (Wahlberg) a buffed up, motorcycle riding military man to whom Brad will have a hard time comparing up to but is willing to try his best so that he will not lose his wife and the kids respect.

Reel Talk:

It doesn't matter who Will Ferrell teams with, he is going to make a movie hilariously funny. This being his second time teaming with Mark Wahlberg they already have some chemical history so they worked well together. Again Ferrell plays the misplaced geek against the hard nose, muscled up Wahlberg, both trying to compete to win the affection of the two children and the beautiful Sarah played by Linda Cardellini. Like all of his films, Ferrell have had you laughing so this one does not disappoint, prepare to laugh at his crazy slapstick humor. With so many choices of movies for the holiday this is one that is recommended for some good hearty laughs.

Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, Thomas Haden Church, Hannibal Burress, Scarlett Estevez and Owen Vaccaro
Directed by: Sean Anders
Rated: PG-13

I give it 3 and a half eaten corn dogs.

THE BIG SHORT

Plot:

During the mid 2000's there were predictions by a few financial analysts about the collapse of the credit and housing bubble that left many homeowners busted and without their homes. Analyst Michael Burry (Bale) and banker Jared Vennett (Gosling) were among some of the people that predicted the demise of the credit and housing structure and prepared themselves to financially gain from the banking fiasco along with some of their investors while millions of people and the banks took substantial losses.

Reel Talk:

Although this movie was informative, if you can follow along with the financial dialog, it is not my type of movie. First movies like this can come on television as a television special. Then second who wants to see the corruption of the banks that may hay affected them during the period that people were losing homes and jobs. It's like pulling a band aid off a wound that has not healed yet. The big names like Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt and a host of celebrity cameos are a draw but this movie is not worth it unless you just want to make the investment of time and money on a movie about people who made bad investments and the people who gained from it. Your gamble!!!

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Marisa Tomei and Brad Pitt
Directed by: Adam Mckay
Rated: R

I give it 2 corn dogs.

SISTERS

Plot:

Maura (Poehler) who is organized and a square along with Kate (Fey) who is a unorganized, wild party-er make up the Ellis Sisters, notoriously known growing up for their infamous house parties. Now living in separate states they reunite when they find that their parents are selling the family house for a smaller condominium. Unwilling to let the house go the girls decide to have one last house party hoping to discourage the sale of the house, but this will be the most epic party they have ever thrown as they reach out to recruit all the old school cool friends that partied with them when they were younger and meet some new friends also.

Reel Talk:

A party ain't a party til these sister run all through it! Yes the combination of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey is one hilarious party. They are one of the funniest comedian teams out right now, maybe because they are true friends off screen so it makes for their great on screen chemistry and then add some of the other funny comedians around like Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz and John Leguizamo just to name a few and you have a funny movie. Just know that they are raw and raunchy and their humor is not for the faint of heart but if you can handle the heat, you will enjoy this movie. Laughter is good medicine so I prescribe this film.

Starring: Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz, James Brolin, Dianne West, John Cena and John Leguizamo
Directed by: Jason Moore
Rated: R

I give it 4 corn dogs.

THE DANISH GIRL

Plot:

Einar (Redmayne) and Gerda (Vikander) Wegener are a Danish married couple who both share the love of being portrait painters. one evening when Gerda needs Einar to substitute as the muse for her painting of a female he becomes intrigued with the feel of women's stockings. Then the two began to use his interest in dressing as a woman in full attire, makeup and wig as a game but he eventually realizes that he really wants to transform into a woman named Lili. He will set out on an adventure to find a doctor that will perform the necessary procedure for the body transformation on him knowing the strain that it will have on his marriage and the risk he is taking with his life.

Reel Talk:

With all the reaction to the Bruce to Caityln Jenner hype, this novelty movie based on the same situation will only serve as a promotional item for those interested in such issues. Performance wise Eddie Redmayne puts in a good performance as both Einar and Lili, the young male artist that strives to be changed to a woman. A very sensitive and tough subject but during this day and times but this is where we are within society. People are wanting to change their physical structure constantly so if there is any interest or curiosity, you may enjoy this film.

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Adrian Schiller, Adber Heard, Ben Whishaw and Matthias Schoenaerts
Directed by: Tom Hooper
Rated: R

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

Plot:

An underachieving writer named Herman Melville (Whishaw) sets out for the docks of Nantucket to talk to someone who may possibly be the link to his breakout book. Once there he sits down to talk with Tom Nickerson (Gleeson) who was a cabin boy on a whale ship during 1820 that was sunk at sea by a giant white whale. He converses about his time aboard the whaling vessel The Essex when he was the age of 14 (Holland) and the power struggle between the ship's captain George Pollard (Walker) who was honored the position because of his name legacy and the first mate Owen Chase (Hemsworth) who is a well respected, seasoned whales man longing for his own ship to captain. The two tolerate each other with the objection of filling their vessel with enough whale oil barrels to satisfy the benefactors stateside. The journey would eventually take them deep within the sea and into a head on battle with the legendary giant white whale that would dismantle the ship leaving the crew shipwrecked and abandoned at sea for some 90 days. Nickerson must rehash the gruesome, nightmarish horrors that he and the remaining survivors experienced while seeking to be rescued.

Reel Talk:

This film is based on the actual events of the whale ship The Essex, the crew and their fateful encounter with a giant whale during 1820 that would lead author Herman Melville to write the fictional classic "MOBY DICK". Now like most films the truth is always distorted so please always research to find out the more accurate account to what really happened during that doomed adventure for The Essex, Captain Pollard, Owen Chase and crew. Still director Ron Howard did an excellent job with this movie along with the cast lead by Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy and Brendan Gleeson. I am pretty certain that this film will get nominated for some awards. A very insightful and entertaining movie that I say is worth the admission to check out, even if just for the historical enlightenment.

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Whishaw, Michelle Fairley and Tom Holland

CHI-RAQ

Plot:

Fed up with all the senseless bloodshed and death brought on by her boyfriend Chi-Raq (Cannon) and rival gang leader cyclops (Snipes), the beautiful and sultry Lysistrata (Parris) organizes along with all the women of Chicago, a sex strike toward the men of the city until they put down the guns and come to peaceful terms. Although the abstinence strike starts in Chicago it eventually spreads throughout the world displaying the power that woman have over their men. Now the men are force to choose whether they want to continue to spread their violence on the streets or spread their women's legs between the sheets, but they can only choose one.

Reel Talk:

CHI-RAQ is a modern day take on the ancient Greek comedy play LYSISTRATA by Aristophanes' about women who withheld tender, loving, affection from their husbands because they were fighting in a war. This film tackles the tough and gritty situation that plagues not just Chicago but all the major urban cities of this nation, "gun violence"! Although it may not solve the problem it addresses the issue putting it in your face, and women holding out on sex, well that may not help these days because it appear some people would rather die than have sex anyway. But still a very entertaining approach regarding gun control with Nick Cannon and Wesley Snipes as the two rival street gangsters, and Samuel L. Jackson as Dolmedes is hilarious. And oh yeah Teyonan Parrish is some sweet chocolate eye candy...LOL! The controversial but risk taking director Spike Lee has come back to life with this film since it has been awhile (2008 to be exact) that he has directed a good film. This is one movie that is worth cashing out and checking out.

Starring: Nick Cannon, Teyonah Parrish, Wesley Snipes, Angel Bassett, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cusack and Jennifer Hudson
Directed by: Spike Lee
Rated: R

I give it 3 and a half eaten corn dogs.

OFFICIAL BOILERPLATE:
A heroic action-thriller, “The Finest Hours” is the remarkable true story of the most daring rescue mission in the history of the Coast Guard. Presented in Digital 3D, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, the film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale. On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds.

MARVEL'S DOCTOR STRANGE BEGINS PRODUCTION

MARVEL’S “DOCTOR STRANGE” BEGINS PRODUCTION

Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams,
Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton Star in the
2016 Debut of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Next Super Hero

Marvel Studios announced today that production has begun on “Doctor Strange,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch (“Black Mass,”  “The Imitation Game”), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave,” “The Martian”), Rachel McAdams (“Southpaw,” “Sherlock Holmes”) and  Michael Stuhlbarg (“Steve Jobs,” “A Serious Man”)  with  Mads Mikkelsen (“Clash of the Titans,” “Casino Royale”)  and Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton (“Michael Clayton,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel”).  The film, which opens in U.S. theaters on November 4, 2016, is directed by Scott Derrickson (“Sinister,” “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”). The film will be shot in several locations around the world, including London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal.

“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
“Doctor Strange” is the latest film in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 3’s goal—over the course of four years and nine films—is to introduce audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites.

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

Director Scott Derrickson’s creative team also includes director of photography Ben Davis, B.S.C. (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); production designer Charles Wood (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); editors Wyatt Smith (“Into the Woods,” Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World”) and Sabrina Plisco, ACE (“Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium,” “Charlotte’s Web”); and visuals effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti (Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”).

Based on the Marvel comic character who first appeared in “Strange Tales” Issue 110 published in July 1963, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in Marvel’s  “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man” and the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War,” (May 6, 2016), “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” (May 5, 2017) and  “Thor: Ragnarok” (November 3, 2017).

Marvel Studios continued its unprecedented success this year with the May 1st release of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which recorded the second biggest opening weekend of all time with a $191.3 million box office. It has also been the #1 release in every country where it has opened and has grossed over $1.4 billion in global box office. On July 17, Marvel released “Ant-Man,” which has grossed to date over $518 million worldwide.

In 2014 Marvel Studios released “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the top-grossing domestic film of 2014 with $333.2 million and $772.8 million worldwide. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which broke the opening record for an April release by earning $95 million in its first weekend, went on to gross more than $711 million worldwide.

In 2013 Marvel produced the megahits “Thor: The Dark World” and “Iron Man 3.” The two films have earned over $644 million and $1.2 billion worldwide, respectively, since their openings. In 2012 Marvel’s critically acclaimed “The Avengers” set an all-time, domestic three-day weekend box-office record at $207.4 million. The film went on to gross over $1.5 billion worldwide, becoming Disney’s highest-grossing global and domestic release of all time.
