THE HUNGER GAMES

Plot:

North America in the future years is divided up into 12 districts consisting of poor people and controlled by a rich society called Capitol. For annual entertainment Capitol hosts a barbaric televised sport, The Hunger Games, in which two teens between the ages 12 – 17, a male and female are selected from each district to compete in a last person to live tournament. The story centers on the couple from District 12, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence), who actually was not selected but rather volunteered to replace her younger sister who was and Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson), a quiet and shy guy that no one even believes has a chance. To prepare them for the tournament they are mentored by a former winner of the game now a current alcoholic named Haymitch (Harrelson) who tries to polish up there images in order that they may get sponsors willing to help them with support that may contribute to them staying alive. Realizing that that they are mismatched against some of their competition, some who are bigger, stronger and were bred from birth for this event, the couple must rely on their natural instincts and talents to give them any type of hope for survival until it comes down to the last two.

Reel Talk:

Ok so the buzz going around is that this will be one of the year’s biggest movies, possibly rivaling the Twilight movies. After screening it, I ask ‘Why’? Is it because of the younger cast of actors and actresses that they believe will give off the same appeal that launched the success of the Twilight series? The casting is good from the young talent to the veteran celebrities. The visual cinematography is good, even the story is decent with the exception that they are pitting scrawny children against larger and savage minded teens. The problem is it lacks originality and the action lacks intensity. This was like a cross between the 1976 Logan’s Run and Stone Cold Steve Austin’s 2007 The Condemned. This is just a hyped movie that lacks on delivery. It’s mediocre entertainment at best.
