RED CARPET PREMIER FOR "GOLDEN SHOES"

It was a night of the stars, even though they were mostly local stars they shined brightly for the red carpet world premier of Anchor Bay Entertainment and Norman Koza Productions' screening of "GOLDEN SHOES" at the Emagine Novi Theaters. The stars of the night were writer and producer Norman Koza, director Lance Kawas, the lead star of the movie Christian Koza, local newsman Roop Raj who had a role in the film, the local kids' volley ball team that starred in the movie and actor, talk show host Montel Williams who co-starred in the film. Unfortunately actress Vivica A. Fox who was also to be in attendance was unable to be there because of a work commitment for filming another film. But it did not effect the festive evening for the excited movie goers who came to support the local film making company and stars.

GOLDEN SHOES is the story of a young boy Christian (Koza) who while his dad goes MIA during an assignment for the army and his mother is hospitalized following a car accident he is taken into custody by a bullying neighbor and his two sons. Christian who normally rides the bench and is the ball boy for his schools volley ball team, when donated a pair of shoes by mall retailer Mr. Mercury (Williams) becomes a volley ball sensation leading his team to a possible championship but also playing with the hope that the better he plays the better chance that his dad will return home.

GOLDEN SHOES will be available on DVD, Digital HD and On Demand October 6, 2015.

THE INTERN

Plot:

Ben (De Niro) is a retired widower who just has not quite adjusted to being alone and unemployed. Always looking for something to keep himself occupied he applies for a new senior intern job for an online fashion store company owned and run by Jules (Hathaway) who is bombarded and on the fence about whether she should hire a CEO to run her company. Ben gets the job and is assigned to Jules as her intern assistant despite her reluctance for having a senior citizen working directly with her. She initially tries to come off hard to deal with but will soon realize Ben is a major asset to her as an employee and a friend.

Reel Talk:

I hate to admit this but the better movies being developed these days are done not with special effects and a ton of action but rather with veteran senior actors and actresses. One it gives them work (a paycheck) and then the opportunity to further the craft that has made most of them screen legends. Although some of the scripts for them may not be Academy Award winning material they still put in award winning performances. That being said Robert De Niro along with Rene Russo team with Anne Hathaway to give us an excellent movie in The Intern. It is delightfully funny with a good storyline and a good cast of characters that will take your mind off the fact that it is a little over 2 hours long. A good movie that I highly recommend and say to the senior actors and actresses...Keep doing what you do best = entertaining us!!!

Starring: Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo, Andrers Holm and JoJo Kushner
Directed by: Nancy Meyers
Rated: PG-13

I give it 4 corn dogs.

BLACK MASS

Plot:

During the 70's the streets of Boston was a battle ground between the Italian Mafia and the Irish Mob that was led by James "Whitey" Bulger (Depp). When Whitey is approached by a former childhood friend who is now FBI Agent John Connolly (Ederton) with regards to him assisting with information to ridding Boston of the Italian mob, he reluctantly accepts but with terms that they allow him to operate with immunity. Now with the alliance of the FBI and the demise of his competition, Whitey and his crew became the most ruthless and notorious mobsters in town, committing just about every crime imaginable. But when there is a leadership change at the FBI, the Irish mob is soon investigated about why they were not being charged with any of their crimes and soon there are indictments for the crew and anyone involved. This lead to Whitey going on the run and becoming one of America's 10 Most Wanted Criminals until his capture in 2011.

Reel Talk:

I have a confession to make, I have not been a big fan of Johnny Depp because of most of the roles that he has portrayed in his films, but as the Irish mobster Whitey Bulger he was a beast. This is one of Depp's best performances. Like most of the prior gangster movies like Goodfellas, The Departed, etc....this one also does not disappoint. Based on the true story of Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger and his notorious and bloody reign as the crime lord of South Boston, this movie will become another gangster classic. There is never a dull moment in this film, it will keep your interest as Depp's depiction of Whitey is menacing. Definitely a must see!

Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Ederton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson and Adam Scott
Directed by: Scott Cooper
Rated: R

I give it 4 corn dogs.

EVEREST

Plot:

People come from all over the world to take on the challenge of ascending to the peak of the world's highest mountain known as Mount Everest. It is 1996 and expert mountain climbing guide Rob Hall (Clarke) of Adventure Consultants will lead a group of thrill seeking mountain climbers on the journey enroute to the top of their destination. During the expedition the group encounters various obstacles complicating their scheduled time which causes them to wind up in the midst of a severe blizzard. The snow storm becomes so bad that it puts the climbers in a dangerous situation which will end up unfortunately fatal for some of them and a fight to survive for the rest.

Reel Talk:

WOW....this is all I can say about this film based on the actual devastating events that took place during 1996 for the mountain climbing group lead by Rob Hall who perished on top of that mountain. As I watched this movie it just had me thinking how amazing the extent that some people will push their minds and bodies to achieve that ultimate approval of self perseverance. I mean if Mount Everest was easily accessible without the risk I would be one of the first to be there at the top, but to put myself in a health and life compromising dilemma...not happening for this guy. Although this movie was visually entertaining especially in 3D, it was very sad. To see that people lost their lives and the mental and emotional strain that must haunt the survivors, leaves you to ask..was it worth it? Still this is a movie I would say that despite being sad it is worth checking out.

Starring: Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Kiera Knightley, Emily Watson, Michael Kelly and Sam Worthington
Directed by: Baltasar Kormakur
Rated: PG-13

I give it 3 and a half eaten corn dogs.

MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS

Plot:

Having survived and escaping the Maze, Thomas and some of his fellow teen escapees are taken into a facility that is suppose to be a safe haven for them against WICKD, the organization that was experimenting them during the maze. But it is not long before Thomas senses that something is not right and he investigates to eventually realize that their new residing place is really another headquarter for WICKD. So now he along with his comrades must escape again and roam the desolated land trying to avoid being affected by a virus known as The Scorch and keep from being attacked by those that have been infected and trying to eat them. They will soon take refuge with a group who like them are seeking a radical section that may have answers and a cure for being infected by the virus and are also being hunted by WICKD.

Reel Talk:

This is the sequel to the 2014 film THE MAZE RUNNER which I really did not like because it was really a boring takeoff of THE HUNGER GAMES, so I went into this one with pretty much the same expectations. But it actually turned out to be much better than the preceding film, giving Thomas and crew a whole new and different adventure. Definitely not a great movie because the storyline could have used some tweaking, but it was still entertaining and yes again better than the first one. Will be a more enjoyable movie if you catch it at a matinee and save a few dollars.

Starring: Dylan O'Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito and Patricia Clarkston
Directed by: Wes Ball
Rated: PG-13

I give it 3 corn dogs.

THE PERFECT GUY

Plot:

Leah (Lathan) is a career woman who has just broken up with Dave (Chestnut) who she had been dating for a few years. While out for a night to unwind she encounters Carter (Ealy), a handsome IT specialist who has been checking out the newly single attractive woman. The two began to date and Leah feels that she has met the perfect guy because he is an attentive gentleman who even her parents seem to like. All is going well until one night while the two are out, Carter displays a violent episode on a man that he felt was making advances at Leah. Totally shocked and scared by his sudden dark sided raged mannerism she feels that it is best to dissolve their relationship but this only fuels Carter's anger to the point that she has to file a restraining order against him. This does not stop her former perfect guy from becoming an obsessed stalker who will do whatever it takes to try to get his girl back, even if it means that he will have to kill for her.

Reel Talk:

This movie is like all the other stalker movies that preceded it with a predictable plot and ending. But just like all the others although typical it is entertainment, especially for the ladies who will enjoy the eye candy of Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut, for men it will be a good date movie at best. It could have been a bit more risque rather than a watered down version of Fatal Attraction that gave the film the PG-13 rating which says it could have been a good HBO, SHOWTIME or LIFETIME movie. Still entertaining enough to be a good date night movie as I mentioned earlier, but you could save a few dollars and catch it at the matinee.

Starring: Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut, Holt McCallany, Kathryn Morris and Rutina Wesley
Directed by: David M. Rosenthal
Rated: PG-13

I give it  corn dogs.

RECOVERY WALK & RALLY XV featuring MICHAEL COLYAR

I got the word that something good was happening in the city, so because it was a little breezy I threw on a hoodie and hitched a ride with my homie Shawn P. Williams and headed out. Our destination was an event that I was invited to by Karl D'Abreu of D'Abreu & Associates who was a major sponsor of The Michigan Celebrate Recovery Walk & Rally XV that took place by the Scott Fountain on Belle Isle. The walk and rally was for those who are still on the road of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and they come together to celebrate their sobriety with family, friends and counselors. This year the keynote speaker at the rally was comedian and actor Michael Colyar who has always owned up to his drug addiction problem when he was younger. Colyar who is one of the top veteran comedians in the game charmed the audience with his witty humor and was more than willing to shake hands and take pictures with anyone who he came across. He was so in touch with the crowd that he even rushed out and did the hustle with them when his favorite hustle song was played. He was a true class celebrity who other celebrities can learn from, because he showed that as long as you can connect with the people you will always be a star in their hearts. This is my life, the life of THE REEL HUSTLER!!!

THE VISIT

Plot:

Two kids Becca (Dejonge) and her little brother Tyler (Qxenbould), wanting to give their single mother a break so she can go on a cruise with her new boyfriend, prepare to go visit their grandparents in a small town in Pennsylvania who they have never met because of the estranged relationship between their mom and her parents that started when she was a teenager. Upon arriving at the home of their grandparents, Nana (Dunagan) and Pop Pop (McRobbie), the siblings are excited and want to document the week stay by video recording it. But it is not long into the visit that the young ones begin to start witnessing some strange behavior from the elderly couple leading them to launch an investigation that  will unwind some mysteriously eerie secrets leaving the kids scared for their lives.

Reel Talk:

Not being a great fan of films written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (because I find them uninteresting and boring), I went into this one expecting nothing different, but to be honest this movie was one of his best yet. Normally his films will build you up with hype and let you down with a weak ending, this one was an exception. It will build you up and then give you an interesting surprise ending, sorta like a modern day Hansel and Gretel story. Although this is a horror, suspense thriller be prepare to get your laugh on because Ed QxenBould as the diverse confused rapping young box will have you rolling laughing. This is a movie that you will enjoy and so it is worth the ticket admission, so go check it out.

Starring: Olivia Dejonge, Ed Qxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie and Kathryn Hahn
Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan
Rated: PG-13

I give it 3 corn dogs.

RETURN OF THE LEGENDS - PART 1

CLASSIC HIP HOP DAY 1

The rain overcast had passed so the evening's weather was beautiful for a night of classic hip hop at the Chene Park outdoor amphitheater off the riverfront of the Detroit River. When the weather is right you can not get a better ambiance than this waterfront theater, with the Canadian skylines as a backdrop and the river lined with boats whose spectators gets to take advantage of the hot summer shows for free. It cannot be denied as one of the best summer venues of the city. So on the Friday evening of September 4, 2014 Chene Park hosted day 1 of their annual signature concert series Return Of The Legends and this show brought that fire to a sold out crowd. Opening up while the crowd trickled in was local rapper Moe Dirdee and then the return of State Property with Beanie sigel and Freeway along with the Young Gunz (Neef Buck and Young Chris) and they had the crowd rocking with all their hits from the Roc-A-Fella label. Next on the menu was Da Brat who didn't let up on the crowd as she kept the audience on their feet while she performed all her hits and also paid homage to the female pioneers that she said paved the way for her. Following her was Jadakiss who brought along his fellow group members from The Lox, Styles P and Sheek Louch who ripped into the crowd with their catalog of songs from the Bad Boy label. But it was when they started performing "All About The Benjamins" and Lil Kim came out to do her chorus that the crowd went wild for The Queen Bee. Lil Kim who took to the stage in a black with white trim tight cat suit did not hold back from letting everyone know that she is still in the game and not ready to give up her title yet as she dropped her booty like it was hot a few times for her fans. I have to be honest and say that this was one of the best rap concerts that I have attended in awhile, so for Day 2's show with K-Deezy, Too Short, E 40 and T.I., they better bring that heat for real because the bar was set high by Day 1's show. Tickets are still available for the second Return Of The Legends show but are going fast so don't get left out for another hot show under the beautiful summer sky of Detroit at the Chene Park amphitheater. The shows are winding down at the venue as they celebrated their 30 year anniversary with some of the hottest shows for the summer. If you missed this year's line up then you missed out big time, but you should definitely make plans to attend some of the shows when they secure next year's schedule. It has been real reel, so on to the next episode. This is my life, the life of THE REEL HUSTLER!!!

THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED

Plot:

Frank Martin (Skrein) is an exceptional transporter who is precise and operates by his rules and they cannot be altered at anytime. But when he takes on a job for Anna (Chabanol), a scorned prostitute and her colleagues he is forced to alter his rules because they have taken his father Frank Sr. (Stevenson) as a hostage until he completes their task which is to take down the Russian mob who they now formerly were employed by. So as they tear through the streets of France in his super charged Audi they must race against the clock before the Russians catch up with them and for Frank to save his dad from dying from being poisoned.

Reel Talk:

All I can say is that Jason Statham is definitely missed in this movie. Ed Skrein is the new actor who is replacing Statham as the no nonsense kick some booty transporter. Now we all know Statham is not known for his acting skills but he was much better as the Audi driving carrier Frank Martin than his replacement. Maybe it is unfair but all the while that I watched the movie I just kept comparing Ed Skrein to Jason Statham. But aside from the bad acting across the board it is filled with  fast car chases and over the top action and outrageous stunts that have made the series popular, so if you are a junkie for just an action movie you may enjoy it. Otherwise this is one that you can catch at the matinee and save a few dollars.

Starring: Ed Skrein, Ray Stevenson, Loan Chabanol, Gabriella Wright, Tatiana Oajkovic and Wenxia Yu
Directed by: Camille Delamarre
Rated: PG-13

I give it 2 corn dogs.

A WALK IN THE VWOODS

Plot:

Just having returned back to the states from promoting his latest novel and then attending the funeral of one of his friends, book writing author Bill Bryson (Redford) starts feeling that he needs something during his aging process to give his life a challenge. So against his wife Catherine's (Thompson) protest he decides on hiking the Appalachian Trail, one of the most vigourous hiking expedition in the world. But just when it starts looking bleek on finding a backpacking mate because all his friends think he is crazy, he gets a call from his long lost friend Stephen Katz (Nolte) who is willing to take the journey with him. As the two aged men engage into their adventure they rekindle the friendship they had been missing all while experiencing life in the wilderness and coping with a host of testing obstacles while they try to complete their mission.

Reel Talk:

This was actually an excellent movie that I really enjoyed. With so many movies these days that are packed with action and special effects, these two veteran actors Robert Redford and Nick Nolte relied on their raw talents with the plush natural scenery of the Appalachian Trail as the backdrop for this film. They used all their years of entertaining us to still provide us with a great hilariously funny movie about two men well over their prime and the will they have to take on the challenges of the world and the bond of their friendship. A movie that I say you can cash out and trust me you will not be disappointed.

Starring: Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman and Kristen Schaal
Directed by: Ken Kwapis
Rated: R

I give it 5 corn dogs.
