DEAR WHITE PEOPLE
Plot:
Sam (Thompson) is the disc jockey for a controversial radio broadcast show, Lionel (Williams) is a nerdy journalist who just wants to fit in among his peers, Troy (Bell) struggles with who he wants to be and who his dad wants him to be and Coco (Parris) is a fame seeking girl with an identity issue, all are African American students dealing with the racial tensions and unequaled rights that plagues them on the campus of a predominantly white college. The issues boil like a pressure cooker up til the lids blows off when an all white frat house throws a party parodying the African American cultural.
Reel Talk:
This film is billed as comedy/drama but it is really straight drama because it lacked heavily in the humor department. Instead of stirring up some laughs it stirs up the continuous issues surrounding the differences between the various races and the differential treatment that exist within the collegiate system. Tyler James Williams puts in a totally surprising role as Lionel and why did I keep expecting Dennis Haysbert to breakout in a spill about Allstate Insurance. This movie doesn't make the grade for passing with reference to going to see it in the theaters, so you can wait and catch it on cable.
Starring: Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Kyle Gallner, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Marque Richardson and Dennis Haysbert
